[livejournal.com profile] torasin is fuckin' spoiled. And he knows it, the grinning bugger.

Wandered up to southland, and I swear to god someone's been urinating in the gene pool. I mean, you're used to the standard types you get when shopping: the screaming kids, the chronically sleep-deprived parents that walk into your path with huge strollers without warning, the befuddled elderly couples that somehow manage to take up four-meter-wide walkways. But this.....Jeeeeeeeesus.

I tend to take a surgical strike approach to shopping. I go in, get what I need, and get the fuck out. Unless it's early morning, or I'm nosing through fabric stories and cheapie shops (I have a terrible weakness for cheapie shops, they just have so many useful things!) , my patience only goes so far. And even then, when browsing, I don't take up an entire aisle, I stay the fuck out of people's way and generally don't act like a mooing idiot who thinks the whole store and all within exist solely to pander to her and her alone.

This concept has escaped many people.

Anyway; 7kgs of rat food, some new arches, snackie treats, and a new kettle. Two stores. Grab some KFC and bring home for lunch. Sounds simple, but took over two fucking hours. And on the way out, I notice something that dear mister [livejournal.com profile] torasin would like. Would like very much. Judging by the complete and utter shiteating grin on his face even now, (there was no way in fuck I could smuggle those things into the house) I was correct in my belief :D

Beer brewing kits. He now has two of them. And all manner of accoutrements - bottles, sterilising kits, gauges, bottle brushes, tappers, carbonation drops, ginger beer bases - he's torn between "but is not my birthday yet" and "WANT MAKE PLAY NAOOOO"

hehehe. spoiled mmyses :D

In other news. Kmemes are still eating my soul. But it gives me something to do while cleaning things up before I put in my SWANKY NEW 500GB SCRATCH DRIVE FOR MVIDDING! *squee*

(and a new USB card and DVD burner, but they are as naught compared to NEW SCRATCH DRIVE SO I CAN FUCKING WELL MVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID!!)

Spoiled!

Laptop all set up and going and dear god, it is sweet. The screen is completely flippable - it's one of those lovely jobs where you can rotate the screen 180 degrees and clip it down so you have a (admittedly very heavy) electronic sketchpad or viewscreen. The image output rotates a full 360, so you can landscape or portrait it to full a4 size :D Gonna make a stand for it so we can laze in bed watching DVDs if we wish

Got the wireless going, after some arguments. Unfortunately the only wireless comp we have is Tapper (new laptop) and it took me ages to track down the drivers. You know you're a geek when you look at the raw hardware ID on an "Unknown Controller" and go "ok, that code = intel. that code = communications device...)

Anyway, argued a fair bit with the wireless - the fact I'd only had an hours sleep didn't help. Or the fact servers kept assploding at work. Neither did the "ah shit, do I have the right drivers? WTF is going on?" or the "we bought a really cheap wireless bridge so that could be farked" scenarios. Especially since it kept picking up the network but not CONNECTING. Turned out in the end that the "disable/Enable wireless" button on the laptop (which I hit when not in use because I'm not a FARKING IDIOT) actually turns off the farking wireless zero service. And never turns it back on. Ever. Even through a reboot. Even if it's set to automatically start. Arggh. BUT I WAS VICTORIOUS!

And [livejournal.com profile] torasin is delighted, because now he can read his email on the shitter. Although the next challenge is finding out how to pry a MacID off a nokia n95, 'cos WEPS and passkeys can be broken, but hardware addresses? Not so much.

Tonight is the cisco configuring, and then our sweet, sweet network becomes even more farking epic. Mwahaha. MWAHAHAHAHA MWAHAHHAAHAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAA *cough*

o.O

I just wish I knew where the floor in my office went....

*dance dance dance*

My Tablet PC came today! Jesus, this thing is a brick :D The monitor flips around 180 to clip over the keyboard and function as a tablet, or you have it upright as a laptop ^_^ Didn't come with an OS, but [livejournal.com profile] torasin snagged XP Tablet Edition on my request a couple days ago at work and is bringing home the uber DVD edition with the additional packs (got a legit licence, just no disks). Standard POST and basic functions look to be working all right, will hold off the final verdict until I've whammed the OS and tested all functions. Including ratty feet prints :D

Also have my D9-RJ45 cable so I can play with the Cisco 1600 Mqhele tossed us, so hopefully no more NAT dropping on the old DSL modem. And it means I can finally set up the wireless access points in the house too.

Currently reimaging [livejournal.com profile] torasin's old as hell 30CDT satellite with XP lite so he can use it as a windows interface for testing stuff at work (he runs X) and sourcing down a new transformer for his swishy Samsung "Jesus christ that's not a laptop that's a fucking tank. I've had B&W TVs smaller than that" M50. And fucking about with Meshy - the conversation yesterday reminded me I always meant to set up Nagios on her to monitor various boxxen (and check that the power was up in the house from remote locations) so I've been merrily fucking with the plugins for that :D

mm. The geek. It is delicious.

Downsides - missed a meeting at work (which was on my day off, so I'm kinda not sure if I'm sad about this or not) and woke up repeatedly last night coughing and spluttering due to the smoke haze combined with an annoying allergy that's been riding my arse and making my chest all slimy and gunked up all week. Argh. Thankfully I was sleeping on the couch so [livejournal.com profile] torasin could sprawl in the warm night without the whole "two person overheating issue" (he had work today. I did not) and the smoke didn't get into the bedroom.

Enigma (my 3tb fileserver) was a bit cranky last night and reminded me that I very dearly want to switch her over to entirely SATA.

So. Anyone have any suggestions for mobos?

Requirements:

- at least six SATA connectors (more if I can get them!) and one IDE
- AMD chipset

This is strictly a file server, so dual proc units aren't ones I'm looking at - I know some of the K8s can run either dual or single, but it seems kinda stupid to have a dual proc system to run a freaking file dump. Don't care about audio, don't care about video. (Shit, I'm still running a Radeon VE7000 in her atm :D)

I'm looking at the MSI K9A2 Platinum series at the moment, it seems rather tasty, but I'm always up for other suggestions. Anyone have any prefs?

Welp, the new fan for the laptop wouldn't power up. So it was the board, dammit. *grr*

Still, I was plotting ways around it (I am not fucking throwing out a $1000 laptop for three malfunctioning pins, dammit!) but there's lots of other errant behaviour that makes me think the mobo has gone queer. Le sigh. Farewell, thou stalwart and faithful Gibbers....

But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?

It is the east, and ebay is selling the same model laptop with a broken screen but working base for $150!

mehehe mine now! All I'll have to do is jam my working screen on the bitch and slap my 40gb win98 HDD in there and we're all good :D Plus I'll have a plethora of spare parts!*

In other news, the rats have new playthings, [livejournal.com profile] torasin has a pile of DVDs and a pie maker, and I has more Smallville to devour. And the kitchen is rapidly filling up with papier-mache tombstones, weeping angel parts, and for some reason a half-eaten pot of gravy. Pics to come eventually...

NOTE: * Please don't tell me to buy a new one. Gibbers happily fulfills my needs as a trot-about, and very cheaply too. I leave the hardcore processing to my desktops for a reason.

[livejournal.com profile] torasin doesn’t get to complain about beeping UPSies any more. So there.

Last night I got woken up by the furious screaming of a UPS from his office, rolled over and went back to sleep. As it had only affected his office, and only one powerpoint in particular, we’d assumed it was one of his rather elderly powerboards responsible that had finally given up the ghost.

I wander in there this morning to put in a shiney new one, and the UPS won’t start. Why? Because the point he loads those boards off had fritzed and blown out the UPS completely.

That fucking UPS is nominally rated up to 500v, and can take a surge up to a thousand volts. (I know this, because it’s the one I used to run for voltage regulation on Enigma, before her new 600w PSU necessitated a beefier model)

This is the power point that services his two main comps (Klaus and Pokie) his TV, his DVD player, his stereo - basically all the whitegoods he personally owns (apart from game consoles) in the house. So far it looks like the UPS did its job and took the damage, but yes. No more complaining methinks :P Although we do have to spend large chunks of this weekend re-arranging his office to use one of the other two ports. I’m encouraging him to use the one on the shared wall to my office, as I’ve never had a problem.

And recommending he get a new UPS :D

So..this weekend, after various jaunts and this and that, the following are safely ensconsed in my greedy paws:

- New KVM for m00f/Meshy
- 2 15 inch LCDs (for my second desk KVM and [livejournal.com profile] torasin’s SPARC/Llama)
- 1 tertiary controller card for Enigma (actually I tell a lie, there’s the SATA, the IDE, and then the onboard SATA/IDE RAID, and then the new card, so that’s fourth)
- 1 new 500gb SATA HDD for Enigma
- a small pile of trashy film DVDs that I love so very very much, and Placebo’s Once more with feeling double DVD-set.
- 1 Phase Pistol
- 1 Laser Screwdriver
- 1 copy of the 25th anniversary edition of The Five Doctors, and while it makes me feel old as shit (I have an original VHS copy purchased WHEN IT CAME OUT) may I just say ZOMG SQUEE [livejournal.com profile] siamesegoth2 IT HAS THE ORIGINAL VERSION AS WELL AS THE FANBOY WANKFEST ON IT

.....And many more items of an extremely nerdy nature.

Consumer whoring is a wonderful thing :D

Dragged Jac to southland to shop her cares away for at least a day, and had a decent day, even if I did fall asleep in the middle of Highlander after we got back (and yet, I stayed awake through Resident Evil III. WTF?) , worked that night and after hitting up the swap meet spent most of Sunday flat on my back with cables in either hand and a hex driver ‘twixt mein teeth buried deep in Enigma. Been far too long since I’ve done a decent kit bash. Planning the redesign of her case for the eventual migration to complete SATA, which at the moment consists chiefly of me looking at these babies on pccase gear and drooling incessantly.

Yes. Hobbies. Keeping busy. Coping mechanisms 4tw.

Oh, and let me just say:

Stupid old farts who think that they’re ooh-so-clever for buying a goddamn AMD 1800+ mobo system for $260 bucks at swap meets, spend most of their time staring vacantly at the LCD keyrings and try to discuss the merits of flash drives?

Do NOT try to crack on to me you wrinkled old fucks. You are not hip. You are not with it. You are not attractive - and I would fuck my own father before I’d let you touch me, you useless wastes of foreskin. At least he fucking knows his technology. And don’t you dare try to patronise me in regards to systems - I am wearing my steelcaps, and I am dying to kill someone this week.

Parts came, and I replaced the keyboard, mouse nub and facade on Jac's laptop. First time!

Not too shabby methinks, especially considering prior the most taxing thing I've ever done to a laptop is replace the hard disk :D And I had to take the entire fucking thing apart (Including the screen assembly) to get the old facade off and didn't have a goddamn guide. Thank fuck for idiot savant skills when it comes to electronics and mechanics :D

Waiting on battery and should be able to snag a new DVD at the swap meet this weekend.

USB Virus makes Macbooks fall to pieces

It's about bloody time we harkened back to the good ol' days of hardware fuckabouts, rather than zombiefied spam-spewing PCs.

And in other news, I'm going to rip a strip five fucking miles long off Ambulance Australia tomorrow for arbitrarily deciding to renew my ambo membership without authorisation. Especially since i fucking cancelled it when I got Land/Air/Sea cover on my health insurance -_-

Mmm. Shiney new meshy *strokes it* PII no more, she's running a lovely AMD XP system. The new mobo means I can stuff more HDDs on too, so peoples pages will be protected in the event of the primary HDD going tits up

[livejournal.com profile] moonmip, if you want meshyness, remember what I said about hard disks? You can get cheap little ones at the swap meet up here on the 29th, all sizes, cheap as shit. A 1gber should do your site and then some and setcha back about $10 :D

Now I actually have the *time* I'm setting her up properly, with backup scheds and cd burns and all that lovely lovely stuff. *preeps* Gonna play about with scripting and shit as well. Brush up on mah mad skillz, ey wot wot wot? But I'll get the secure SSH going first, then play about during dead time at work to get her up and running fully.

Hot day tomorrow. Rats coming in to work to be peeped at and shamelessly attention whore :D
