Bad day

Fiskas had been fine last night, if a bit dopey. She's been in and out on the meds, and her throat is swollen, which is making her a bit unhappy. Still, she clambered up me, into the carry case for the vets and sat down peeping at me. Spent most of the trip to the vet curled in a corner whiskering away while Onion stuck her snout through every hole available and wiffled like mad.

Got to the vets and I damn near shit myself. She was sprawled on her side, eyes half-open and eyes and nose covered in porphyrin. She had that much on the inside of her forepaws that I honestly thought she'd injured herself. She perked up a bit as I sat her on my chest and snuggled her under my jacket, but was still very much out of it.

The vet had a look and again, we're still trying to figure out where it's come from. No new rats, no other animals, Onion's not sick, it's a bit of a mystery. But she had perked up a bit, so I got a baytril prescription, twice a day to hit the infection hard.

Onion was de-corseted, had her fur and stictches checked, only thing left was a scab that was quite all right to be worried at. So I get them home and i give Fiskas her baytril. I start running a shower to steam up the place to make her a bit happier, and when I come back, she's wheezing. Worse than wheezing, barking, woofing, making wrong wrong noises.

I open the cage and she bolts towards me. I turn her over to check her face and i realise that her mouth is full of thick saliva, mixed with the baytril and she's fucking choking. I bolted straight into the bathroom with her and managed to clear her mouth and throat out. Scared the living crap out of me. Too fucking close. She was just lying there, looking up at me, and not fighting in the slightest as I turned her over and checked her mouth - and anyone who knows a rat knows the fight they put up when you try and flip them. She just laid there and took it.

I spent a lot of that morning holding her in a room full of steam and doing a lot of fucking useless crying. I nearly called [livejournal.com profile] torasin half a dozen times just so he could come and say goodbye. but something made me...not.

She recovered a bit, and then a lot more when I gave them veggies. I noticed she can't hold much in her mouth which is a possible abscess (but one to make her this sick would be seriously obvious, this is something I've already brought up with the vet) so I was mashing up a lot of her food. Yes, I ended up chewing a lot of it for her and giving her puree because I was out of baby food (something I am going to be massively rectifying today) We had a few issues where some food was getting stuck, or she was literally dropping it from her mouth, so I ended up boiling and almost liquifying a huge pile of peas and spoon fed them to her, and she was happily attacking them and getting a lot of energy back. She even had enough energy back to groom.

It's bad. Very very fucking bad. But we're fighting it, even if it's for just one more day.

But to end on a happier note, Onion had her corset off today. She kinda knew it was coming, and as we were at the Vet early she got to romp around a bit. Spent a lot of time clambering over the stuffed animals in the corner while waiting, and bobbing up and down to nose at me while I sat nearby with Fiskas curled up under my coat.

Went into the office, and off came the ratty corset of bandage tape. Onion went ballistic. Bounced everywhere, climbed everywhere, revelled in her freedom and choofed happily away all the way home. Also walked right into my shower, sat under a spray and got herself nice and clean. The block has been removed from their vertical tube, and I put the ladder back in, so she's not stuck on the bottom floor any more. Immediately upstairs and sniffling like mad, before taking over the upper nest box and bruxing royally from within its depths.

For ze Rats:
- Bananas
- Avacado
- Sweet Potato
- Peas & Corn
- Plain Yoghurt
- Mini food processor
- Jars for holding pureed food mixes
- 14 tins of baby food
- Two bags of litter
- Chicken livers

For [livejournal.com profile] torasin:
Cheepeees to cook
Chicken nuggets

For me:
The Tenth Planet & The Reign of Terror audios. C'mon, they were $10 each!

Must remember to pick up snackies for [livejournal.com profile] torasin at a later date.

And [livejournal.com profile] ryttu3k I FORGOT TO POST THE BLOODY DVDS. Well, I forgot to take your addy with me. Did pick up an express parcel pack though, so you should get them tomorrow anyway (will drop in box tonight)

Fiskas is guardedly better. I let the rats roam about the kitchen while cooking/pureeing up some fuds for them, and the only moment of distress she had was when she stepped all through the dish of yoghurt I'd left on the floor for them, then bolted under the fridge and came back out wearing four huge fluffy dustbunny mukluks she couldn't shake until I made her run around in the shower. She's more chipper, and she's eating a lot happier, but I'm guarded. Rats are like most small animals - they hide a lot.

Onion is just psycho.
