Does anyone know what the fuck kinda basis the argument "But I'm from the future! I can't die in the past!" comes from?

'cos...it's stupid. and doesn't make sense.

I have no idea where it comes from. But it does some kinda stupid.

Though maybe it's not "it's impossible for me to die in the past!", rather it's "I don't want to die in this crappy time"

or something... *shrugs* :P

Depends on which past, if it refers to "Your" past then it is just the classic time paradox (see Zim and Grrr's exploding head withthe piggy and the time spacial object replacment device)

If you mean time before you were born then YES Yes it is stupid...

Well, if I go back in the past, say - half an hour

And the me of half an hour ago freaks, and hits the me from now with a keyboard in the face and kills me.

I'm dead

In my own past.

Also would be a funny ass thing to see prosecuted in court...

it may have something to do with causing a split in the time line.. depending on what sort of time travel you believe...

hey that'd make a kewl meme..

"you believe in back to the future time travel rules.."

cool

How can it cause a split in the timeline? apart from the whole "parallel universes where different choices are made" thing...in which case, the you that survives in a parallel universe isn't the you that dies in the past in this one.

I go back in time. I die in the past - past defined as any moment prior to now. Yeah, it's my past, but in this body, as this being, it's also become my future. Taking me out of my time right here and now won't take me out of time five minutes ago, or an hour, or even three years. Those leyas are different leyas to the one now.

The argument has its basis in Narrative Imperative. The time traveler's companion has to make the argument so that the time traveler can point out that It Doesn't Work Like That.
