Just checked Panda....

The Vid Card (one of the most expensive upgrades in the way of getting Meshuggah up and running) has dropped in price....

Substantially

ATI 9600 Pro 256mb RAM GeCube/Pcolour....$159.

That's $100 cheaper than they had it advertised a week ago...

And then I saw....

9800 SE 256mb RAM.....$199

*quivers*

Fuck it. Tuesday (payday) I'm bolting down there straight after work and I'm getting one. Which means, my beloved [livejournal.com profile] torasin, you get the Radeon with the TV link when I pop around on Thursday :D

Then all I need is the motherboard/processor (getting those together) and BAM! Upgrade done! Then I just need the 8gb HDDs, which I can pick up from a store that's literally just under work, reg the domain names and hosting goes live baby!

*does the dance of geeky glee* A whomping huge upgrade for m00f, and a webserver all in one! *dances some more* And a new DSL modem. GAWD I need a new DSL modem...this one is unmitigated CRAP.

you want a 6 Gb HD, I think I got a few knocking around? Or you could jut set up a software rid across acouple off old 2 Gig's Teehee.

BTW check out MSY, they have pretty good prices too.

Why not PCI-Expres BTW???

:P I'm planning on running 7 8gb HDDs (well, there are seven caddies, I'll fill them as needed) for the web sites - I like keeping everything on seperate drives where possible. Going for a 30 or 80gb primary. (slackware 10, Apache, MSQL server, I likes room to grow)

No PCI-Express because I simply don't game that much. I'm getting the new vid card because this one lags a bit on my video editing (and it's due for an upgrade anyway, SHINY SHINY TREATS!) but PCI-E would be wasted on this thing...the most challenging game I regularly play on it for the vid card would be bloody Harry Potter or American McGee's Alice..I usually play Pharaoh / Emperor / Theme Hospital / Dungeon Keeper...none of which need balls.

vid editting, what you using to edit? it would have to be a mighty crapy card rather than a proccesor problem.

you using premier pro? you know I'm a profesional editor amount other things.....

Game wise the 9600xt is only marginally slower than the 9800se (core is slightly slower both have the same number of pipelines) the Gecube isnt the best as the memory doesn't overclock so well, infact it run slow.

BTW 4 ide controlers or SATA? or given the size I'm assuming SCSI? The speed issue is becoming less and less esp since SATA. there was even talk awhile ago of "overclocking" some WD HDDS using non-standard bioses to increase spindle speeds to 10K rpm..... just waiting for SATA2 as it has external conectors in the spec meaning external drives at full speed!!!!!

the crappy vid card IS the reason for the performance on premiere. That's why I'm upgrading the video card with the rest!

I'm going for the 9800SE over the 9600...I know it's a small increment, but I can't turn down a 9800 at that price.

*is rather puzzled as to why you suddenly assume I'm doing the exact opposite of everything I've said I'm already doing*

the new mobo I'm getting has both IDE and SATA RAID on board :D Vroom vroom baby!

I assume nothing!!! no really just interested on the thinking. Every one has different balance points when it comes to price vs performance. my only point was that the 9800 was the SE version whic honly has 4 pipelines rather than 8 and 128bit memory addresing rather than the full 256bit.

I've built several systems running Premier from ver 4.0 to PRo 1.5 generally the vid card is the least of your problems with the exception of VIVO which is'nt really supported in PRO anyway. It will run quite happily on a PCI vid card. Processor and HDD have a much greater influance over performance. After Effects however benifits shitloads from a good 3d Graphics card as it now has openGL accleration (6.0 onwards).

Later BRETT

Ahh...

The bitch I was having was on previewing the raw .AVI, especially on transitions. The radeon just can't cope with having that much shit thrown at it at once.

thats not a card issue but processor. Ive run it on a matrox G400 not exactly renound for grunt with no issues. What codex are you using, anything other than DV will cause it to shit itself. Also check you don't have it outputtting to DV device as well as desktop, this will cause choppy playback on all but high end PC's. It also depends on the transitions, some dont have low quality previews, almost none use graphics card accleration (a few 3d transitions do but thats it).

I thought it might have been the processor, but I'd upgraded to another and the problem persisted (in fact I'd snaffled a new mobo/proc/RAM) and the only common thing was the vid card. Plus the CPU useage was barely hiccoughing at the preview.

hmm.... check the playback options.... whats the proc. I'm currently usign a celeron 1.9 (yeah I know....) and only have choppy playback when really stressed, the puter not me. Any Colour correction will kill it (even on a 3.2 p4) but straight fades are fine.

Athlon XP 2200 for a proc, soon to be XP3000+ *happy nerd grunts*

I'm not that fussed a the moment, don't have any mvids in the pipeline, and starting to wipe stuff off m00f for the reformat (new mobo = fresh install or baaaaaaad baaaaaaaad things happen when your proc ids don't match up)

Never had that many problems with swapping processors and hardware etc. did a complete swap on a harddrive before. Mind you I reinstall my system about every 6 months jsut because of the amount of crap that acumulates.

Ooh...nice to see. My 9600XT went to the gods far too soon (fan died while I was away and it fried). At that price I just might be able to justify a replacement :)
