Was nosing about TV tropes, losing my soul and all productivity (As per usual) when I came across a chance mention that he'd done a film about Auschwitz.

ok, it's like one of those trainwreck moments when you go "I shouldn't do this..." but Pandora's box and all that.
The teaser is easily the most powerful 49 seconds of footage I've ever seen in my life.
He pulls no punches whatsoever. It's brutal. It's horrific. And it's exactly what happened.
Then I found a review which made me utterly loathe humanity in all its form. Some priss-headed little tit, and I quote:
"..then we see hundreds of people on the inside [of a gas chamber] stripped naked and screaming and dying in a culmination of quickly cut and panicked shots. Oh yeah, holocaust was terrible. worst crime in the history of humanity (said in offhand tone) so, um, what's this actually going to be about? Because it seems a little tasteless."

You stupid little shit. Yes, it's brutal, yes it's horrific, and yes, it may be not what you want to see in a "holocaust movie". You want to see something with the heroic resistance, or the good guys, you want schindler's list or sophie's choice, something safe and romanticised somewhat (and believe me, even in the most horrific moments of those movies, they were fucking romanticised and almost glamourised. This is why I generally loathe holocaust movies produced by hollywood)
Guess what? It wasn't a haze of 1940's nostalgia, Vera Lynne and carefully couched sympathetic nazi characters. It wasn't someone getting beaten and then "disappearing" and some carefully couched discretion shots to save your poor widdle eyes. These camps are places where between twelve and seventeen million human beings were fucking murdered in horrific ways. These are places where people were worked to death, starved, beaten, gassed, experimented on - these were places where Romani parents plotted and planned and stole enough morphine to euthanise their own children because it was the kindest thing they could do for them.
Yes it is horrific. And if you see it in poor taste, then you goddamn well need to watch this fucking movie and wake the hell up and realise that this actually happened. Day after day. Year after year. Industrialised murder and brutalisation on a national scale.
If you don't fucking learn and face exactly how far the evil in humanity stretches, then you will never, ever be able to prevent it in the future.
